The Han Solo stand-alone spinoff finally has their Lando.
It was announced via Star Wars Twitter account that Donald Glover has joined the cast to play young Lando Calrissian in the untitled 2018 Han Solo film. Like December’s Rogue One, the film will explore Solo’s life before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope.
Deadline is reporting:
Glover will play the character originated by Billy Dee Williams in 1980’s Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Acharming, slippery former professional gambler and smuggler who, by the events of that film, has somehow become the owner of the vast mining settlement called Cloud City, Lando goes on to become a pivotal figure in the Rebellion. Details about Han Solo‘s story are not yet known, but it’s widely assumed that it will lay out the precise relationship between Lando and Han only hinted at in Empire. Among the known backstory details, Lando, formerly a close friend of Han Solo, was the original owner of the iconic starship the Millennium Falcon before losing it to Solo in a game of cards. (Which is implied, though never stated outright, to have contributed to the decline of their friendship.)
Glover joins Alden Ehrenreich, announced earlier this year to play the younger version of Han Solo in the film, which is being directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
