Lip Sync Battle is pretty much the perfect form of celebrity programming. It gives us everything we love about nighttime talk shows without any of the stuff we don’t like (the 42 minutes’ worth of fake banter and two tedious celebrity interviews). The show, which was devised by Emily Blunt and John Krasinski and based on an idea introduced to Jimmy Fallon by Stephen Merchant, drew little interest from network TV. This is how it ended up on Spike TV, which apparently was the only network at the time who understands the true meaning and value of “viral content.”
We won’t soon forget Anne Hathaway on that “Wrecking Ball,” Terrence Howard vs. Taraji P. Henson (Parts 1 and 2), Jenna Dewan Tatum literally doing that scene from Magic Mike, the glory of Shaquille O’Neal’s rendition of “Love Shack,” or Clark Gregg turning “Toxic.”
That’s why we thought it would be fun to put together a list of pairings we want to see on the show.
VENUS VS. SERENA
Serena and Venus Williams are used to competing against each other on the court. According to Vogue, they also have an annual, off-the-hook, secret dance-off:
On a balmy April afternoon in Palm Beach, Florida, a red carpet was rolled out in front of an abandoned strip-mall Cineplex. Inside, in one of several defunct movie theaters, Serena Williams, by many estimations the greatest tennis player of all time, was dangling from an aerial hoop that was suspended from the ceiling, performing a Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatic routine to The Little Mermaid’s “Kiss the Girl.”
