First Look at NBC's The Wiz; Will Include New Song

By  |

In case you missed it, NBC has started airing its first teasers for its musical production of The Wiz. The live performance of The Wiz airs on December 3, 2015 – it’s not that far away! The Wiz is produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron in conjunction with Cirque du Soleil. Cirque will mount what is likely to be an incredible production for a major Broadway revival during the 2016-2017 season. NBC has confirmed the show will include a new song penned by Ne-Yo, who will play the Tin Man; in collaboration with Elijah Kelley (the Scarecrow), music producer Harvey Mason, Jr.; and Tony winner Stephen Oremus, (music director). The new song will be performed by Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion.

This may be one of NBC’s best projects during the Robert Greenblatt era, since he has championed musicals and live events and is now helping give The Wiz a Broadway boost. The Wiz won 7 Tony Awards but hasn’t been revived since 1984. NBC and Cirque are taking a major risk, but it is one that could pay huge dividends. Whether any of the NBC cast stick with the show for its Broadway run is irrelevant; there is phenomenal talent in the New York theater community and a hunger for more diverse shows.

The stellar cast includes:

Stephanie Mills returns to The Wiz but this time she’s Auntie Em, rather than Dorothy.

Stephanie Mills: Auntie Em

Shanice Williams: Dorothy

Queen Latifah: The Wiz

Mary J. Blige : Evillene

David Alan Grier: Cowardly Lion

Uzo Aduba: Glinda

Amber Riley: Addaperle

Elijah Kelley: Scarecrow

Common: Bouncer

Ne-Yo: Tin Man.

I think watching Uzo Aduba go from playing Suzanne on Orange is the New Black to Glinda the Good Witch might be what I’m looking forward to the most.
