GREAT SCOTT! The future is here!

By  |

October 21st 2015 at 4:29pm, Marty McFly joined Doc Brown in the future. Today is Back to the Future Day celebrating that we’ve finally made it!

From the movie’s release in 1989 to today, it’s amazing how some of their predictions came true! Here’s a look at what the creators got right.

While they may not be available to little girls on their scooters, there are companies like Hendo Hover that have created a hoverboard. Even the great Tony Hawk got to test it out!

Flat Screen TV

In the 80’s when televisions were huge boxes, the idea that it could be flat and have multiple channels playing at once was insane. Today, flat screen tv’s are both affordable and light. Heck, even puny me can carry one around!

Video Conferences

Who would ever think we could talk to a person through a television? Now thanks to programs like Skype, you can talk face to face with people all over the world. Skype is a staple for not only families but also podcasters to get guests on their shows.

While it’s illegal for the news media to use drones for reporting, companies like Amazon now implement this technology to deliver packages in various cities. The military also use drones to gather information to keep human lives out of dangerous areas.

Tablets and iPads

It might have been a futuristic idea to sign a petition on a little tablet in 1989. Today, it’s impossible to go anywhere without seeing someone on their iPhone or iPad. We can even make debit card payments on tablet squares making it easy for small businesses and artists to make money.

Chicago Cubs and Miami Marlins

While the Chicago Cubs haven’t won the World Series yet, they still have a (slight) chance to go all the way (though the Mets are leading their series 3-0 at the time this article was written). Also in 1989 when Back to the Future II was released, Miami didn’t have a baseball team. The Florida Marlins moved cities in 2012 to become the Miami Marlins.

Those are just a few of the examples that Back to the Future II got right. So celebrate this day, hop into your DeLorean, and welcome to the future! Have you see the new logo USA Today is sporting or watched the trailer for Jaws 19?

What’s your favorite Back to the Future film in the series? How old were you when you saw it? Let us know in the comments!

Hope set out into the world to be a Pokemon Coordinator. When she realized that Pokemon were not real, she pursued her other passion: writing. Hope was raised in fandoms and saw how they can help save the world from her work with The Harry Potter Alliance. Now, she works to bring that love into writing one article at a time. She's also a diehard Atlanta Braves fan, so don't diss her team.
