I Wasn’t Ready for the New ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ Trailer
Mary Poppins is back! Julie Andrews took on the role of the beloved nanny in 1964, and now Emily Blunt has taken up the familiar parrot umbrella. The film was a major point in the Disney legacy, even as Walt had to battle with creator P.L. Travers to get it made (a battle shown in the film Saving Mr. Banks). Many have said they don’t want a remake, but rest assured: Mary Poppins Returns is a tale of the Banks children, now grown but revisited by Mary, and loosely based on the book series.
I was a big Poppins fan as a tween, even buying a Disney Store Poppins doll that transforms from her everyday look to Jolly Holiday. I also had a longtime crush on Dick Van Dyke thanks to Nick at Nite. A new trailer aired during the 90th Academy Awards and I wasn’t ready for a reimagining of one of my favorite childhood movies.
Set in 1930s London, Jane and Michael Banks are now grown-up, with Michael still living in the house on Cherry Tree Lane. He lives there with his three children, Annabel, John, and George, and the housekeeper named Ellen. After Michael suffers a personal loss, Mary Poppins comes back to the Banks family with street lamplighter Jack, and eccentric cousin Topsy
The teaser starts out with 1930’s dreary London and the windstorm kicking up a young child’s kite. We also see Jack, the lamplighter, as played by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Honestly, the scenery mimicked the dreariness you may feel right now. Yes, more than ever, we need a fanciful nanny who brings magic wherever she goes. Sadly Dick Van Dyke is the only original cast member who will make a cameo, but Julie Andrews completely approves of the new generation of Poppins, so worry not.
