Is Pokemon Trying to Build a Multiverse?

By  |

I’ve been eagerly awaiting new information on Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. I loved the first games of Sun and Moon, but I did have a lot of issues with it. Some of these were minor like not being able to sail between islands and huge areas on the map that we can’t explore. You know where Lana’s trial is? All those waterfalls in the background? I want to go up those freaking waterfalls! I rammed my Lapras’ face into the wall too many times trying to go up those things. Of course there’s no National Pokedex either which is more annoying than anything.

As the trailers and information streamed out about Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, we got a better idea of how these additions would build the world of Pokemon in the Alola region. Necrozma kidnaps Solgaleo or Lunala depending on which version you get. We have new areas to explore (still no sign of going up those waterfalls). They’re bringing more past generation Pokemon into the game for a bigger Pokedex (still no word of a National Dex). It’s been really cool.

And then they dropped a new trailer. SPOILERS AHEAD!

A couple things stood out to me right away. First, you’re hopping on your Legendary Pokemon and riding through a wormhole into these other worlds. You come out to find either beautiful paradises like Buzzwole’s home or dark cities like Ultra Megalopolis. The Ultra Beasts aren’t these weird creatures living in a pocket dimension. They’re have their own established homes.

Second, one of the characters named Dulse sends out a Pokemon in battle. This isn’t like the normal Team Skull brawls where they fight with a common Zubat. He sends out one of the new Ultra Beasts, UB Adhesive.

Wait, stop a moment.

The Ultra Beast is his personal Pokemon. Does that mean it’s common in his world? They just frolic around in the wild like normal Pokemon? He has captured it, owns it, and like all good trainers probably gives it too many rainbow Pokebeans to max out it’s affection. While the Ultra Beasts are rare in the main Pokemon world, are they the every day Pokemon of Ultra Megalopolis? Maybe UB Adhesive is the Rattata of this realm.

This makes me wonder if they’re creating a vast multiverse. We saw the beginning of it in ORAS, but they’re fully doubling down on it. This isn’t Game Theory anymore. They are giving us fully developed other worlds full of people and Pokemon who live together just like in the Pokemon world for the last twenty years. It makes me excited that we could possibly have entire Pokemon games in these realms. I would love to see a super stylized game with completely new and weird Pokemon. What if there’s an opposite world where super effective attacks are actually weak? What if we get new types? New abilities? New everything!

This completely changes Pokemon as we know it. It gives the games infinite possibilities to branch out into anything they want. I’m both excited and wary to see how this pans out.

What do you think? Are you excited about the Pokemon multiverse? Let us know in the comments!
