‘Sesame Street’ Give First Sneak Peek of Julia, Their Newest Muppet Character With Autism

By  |

Meet Julia! She’s the newest member of the Sesame Street muppet gang!

She’s a very special little four-year-old girl who likes singing, playing, and coloring. There’s one more thing about Julia that makes her a groundbreaking character. She has Autism. Julia has been in print and in digital form for a year now as part of Sesame Workshop’s “Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children” initiative. In April, she will finally make her official debut on the show.

TV Line gave insight about Stacy Gordon who will be Julia’s puppeteer:

Stacy Gordon — a veteran puppeteer whose son is on the autism spectrum and who has worked as a therapist to youngsters on the spectrum — is among those helping bring Julia to life. “It is so much fun to be on set with everyone, and get to play up all the positive things I’ve seen with the kids that I’ve worked with,” Gordon told the Associated Press. “At the same time, I come at this with a reverence. I don’t want to let the autism community down.”

The Associated Press released a sneak peek video with Julia. Big Bird meets her and doesn’t know quite what to make of this new girl. They also show the behind the scenes process to bring Julia into existence.

Julia’s first episode, “Meet Julia,” airs Monday, April 10 on HBO.

Hope set out into the world to be a Pokemon Coordinator. When she realized that Pokemon were not real, she pursued her other passion: writing. Hope was raised in fandoms and saw how they can help save the world from her work with The Harry Potter Alliance. Now, she works to bring that love into writing one article at a time. She's also a diehard Atlanta Braves fan, so don't diss her team.
