First Look at New Power Rangers Movie: Dark Breakfast Club?

By  |

When I was a kid, I loved Power Rangers. I remember the first time I saw it. They had cancelled my favorite show at the time, Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders, and on came this show about “teenagers with attitude.” I gave it a try and became obsessed with the show. I had a Power Rangers themed birthday, I owned so much merchandise, and as an adult, I mourned the sudden death of Thuy Trang who had portrayed my favorite Ranger Trini Kwan.

So when I heard Hollywood would be jumping on the remake bandwagon with Power Rangers, I was quite the skeptic. Already the film has had it’s slew of controversies. At New York Comic Con, they released the first teaser trailer. Nerves rising and negative thoughts crowding my brain, I hit the play button.

You know, I’m actually a bit impressed with it as well as disappointed. It was a pretty okay trailer for remaking a 90’s kids show. I can see the potential for a franchise. At the end of the day though, these aren’t my Rangers. I was hoping for more of that 90’s campiness it was known for. I’ll stick with the stellar Boom Studios! comic that balances cheesy moments with the emotional real world problems the Power Rangers face.

Check out the trailer below.

Hope set out into the world to be a Pokemon Coordinator. When she realized that Pokemon were not real, she pursued her other passion: writing. Hope was raised in fandoms and saw how they can help save the world from her work with The Harry Potter Alliance. Now, she works to bring that love into writing one article at a time. She's also a diehard Atlanta Braves fan, so don't diss her team.

Hope, I literally feel the SAME EXACT way that you do. When I first heard about it, my first reaction was an angry WHY?! But then I quickly got over it because that’s Hollywood. But I just can’t get behind and even give it a chance because I also grew up with the original and these ARE NOT my Power Rangers. The way you described watching the trailer was pretty much exactly how I felt too “Nerves rising and negative thoughts crowding my brain, I hit the play button.” I mean it’s was a pretty good trailer, as trailers go. But I don’t think I’ll be seeing it…
