Neil Gaiman Shares Story for David Bowie in "The Return of the Thin White Duke"

Neil Gaiman made his story The Return of the Thin White Duke available on his website. The story is Gaiman’s origin fable for David Bowie. This was not the first time Gaiman was inspired by Bowie. He asked that Lucifer from the Sandman series be drawn with Bowie in mind. Gaiman shared the story, which was included in his collection Trigger Warning, on his website. He said:

I never met David Bowie. After a while it almost became a game: I only had one hero left, and it was him. The nearest I came to it was meaning to send him a copy of Trigger Warning, with this story in it, and an apologetic note.

It’s unabashedly fan fiction.

Amazing artist Yoshitaka Amano made the beautiful art for the story, which follows one of Bowie’s stage personas and includes his marriage to Iman, spinning it into a fantastical tale. You can read it here.
