Two Female-Led Comics Hit the Small Screens: Y, the Last Man and Hack/Slash
When I got the news these two would hit the small screen, I was so elated that I actually forgot to write about the news, instead choosing to go find some of my Hack/Slash volumes! Oops.
Y: The Last Man is an three-time Eisner winner, and a female-led comic by Brian K. Vaughan, and has been optioned by FX for a television show. The comic is about Yorick, the last man on Earth, who survives a disease that kills every mammal with a Y chromosome. I’m so excited to see a Vaughan property go to TV, especially since the Marvel Runaways movie seems like a dream that will never come true. Y: The Last Man has been in various stages of development off and on for film since 2007. I’m still reading the series, but I’m excited to see Y: The Last Man arrive on TV screens.
Hack/Slash, a horror comic featuring a female fatale, formerly a final girl, who battles slashers ala Buffy, but in a much more bloodier way, is heading to TV. Relativity Television, the folks who bring you Catfish and Young & Hungry, will develop the show with Skip Woods. No word on a possible network.
It’s worth mentioning that both of these comics are series you should pick up, if you haven’t already.
I’m glad to see that television networks are tapping into the treasure of non-Marvel and DC comics for new shows.
