Orange is the New Black's Danielle Brooks to Co-Star in The Color Purple on Broadway

We’re super excited that the mega-talented Danielle Brooks is getting an opportunity to co-star in The Color Purple with Jennifer Hudson (Shug Avery) and Cynthia Erivo (Cellie). Best known as Orange is the New Black’s Taystee, Brooks attended Julliard (along with fellow OITNB star Samira Wiley.) Brooks brings amazing buoyancy and depth to Taystee, making the character more than just comic relief. The women on OITNB are so incredibly talented, it’s awesome to see the industry taking note.

Brooks said The Color Purple was the very first Broadway show she ever saw when she was 15. “Now, 10 years later, I get to do it,” she told reporters. “I’m trying to hold it together.” Brooks will play Sofia, the role played by Oprah Winfrey in the Spielberg movie. Brooks said the movie had quite an influence in her life, and she still begins journal entries by writing “Dear God,” just like Celie does in the Alice Walker novel. Oprah produced The Color Purple, which begins previews on November 10 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater. Say what you want about Oprah, but she’s bankrolling some great projects on the stage and screen.
