Sister to Sister: Trung Nhi and Trung Trac

Disney’s Elsa and Anna are fictional sisters who overcame dead parents and Elsa’s powers to overthrow the evil Hans. If you think that’s a story, look East for something more inspiring. Vietnam’s Trung sisters, Trung Trac and Trung Nhi, led a successful revolt against Chinese occupiers in 40 A.D. The sisters lived in the first century, a time where Vietnamese women had significant freedom. They were leaders, serving as judges, politicians, warriors, merchants and property owners. The sisters recruited an army of 80,000 to kick the Chinese out of Vietnam. They selected 36 women whom they trained to be generals. After their success, Trac became queen (“she-king-Trung”) and tried to establish a government consonant with Vietnamese values. When the Chinese eventually used their superior firepower to re-conquer Vietnam, the sisters are believed to have killed themselves. Try letting that one go, Disney.
